Try the outfit in a chair

A waistband that feels fine for a short walk may become noticeable after two hours sitting down. Choose trousers or a skirt with enough room for your normal seated position. Check the fabric behind the knees and at the hip, especially if the garment is stiff or has substantial seams.

Think about pockets before filling them. A phone or wallet can press awkwardly against the body when seated. Keep essential items accessible in a secure part of your bag instead of distributing everything through your clothes.

Use a layer rather than guessing the temperature

The train may feel warmer or cooler than the platform. A removable knit or jacket lets you respond without changing the base of the outfit. Choose something you can put on while seated and fold into a manageable size.

Long scarves and trailing belts can become cumbersome around seats and luggage. Contain loose ends when moving through the carriage. A very long skirt or trouser hem also deserves attention near steps and doors; keep the fabric clear as you board.

Dress for carrying the bag

You may need to lift luggage, walk between platforms or stand while waiting. Test the outfit with those movements in mind. A restrictive shoulder or sleeve can be more frustrating than a crease in the fabric.

Shoes should be familiar and suitable for the station as well as the seat. If they are easy to loosen, check that they still stay securely on your feet when walking. Plan any footwear change privately and consider the people sharing the carriage.

Arrive with a workable next step

If you are going straight to a meeting or dinner, choose a base that can continue into that setting. A shirt under a soft layer may be enough. Keep a small change separate from the main luggage if you know you will need it, rather than opening the whole case in a crowded place.

Some creasing is simply part of travelling. Look for clothes you are happy to wear after sitting, not garments that only satisfy you immediately after pressing. That gives you a more useful outfit and one less thing to think about during the journey.
