Name what is bothering you
Stand back from the mirror before reaching for another top. Is the outfit too formal for the occasion, too bulky at the middle or simply missing a colour you enjoy? These are different problems. A vague feeling that something is wrong often leads to changing everything, which makes it harder to see what helped.
Choose one description you can act on. The jacket feels heavy beside the skirt; the shoes look disconnected from the trousers; the neckline disappears beneath the scarf. You are describing a relationship between pieces, not declaring that a garment is unwearable.
Keep the anchor
Pick the piece you most want to wear and leave it on. It may be the dress that suits the weather or the comfortable trousers you need for a long journey. Everything else is available to change. Without an anchor, an outfit problem can turn into an unplanned review of your entire wardrobe.
Change the nearest related item first. If the trouser hem and shoe shape clash, try another shoe before changing the coat. If the neckline feels crowded, remove the necklace or scarf before looking for a new blouse. This keeps the experiment small enough to understand.
Sometimes subtraction is the answer. A belt, visible sock, patterned bag and large earrings may all be things you like, but they do not have to appear together. Put one aside and look again. A quieter version can give a favourite detail more room without making the outfit plain.
Give each version a fair look
Fasten the shoes, settle the waistband and let the jacket fall naturally. Comparing a fully dressed version with one that is half adjusted tells you very little. Walk away from the mirror and return after a moment, or take two photographs from the same position.
Stop when the outfit is suitable and comfortable enough for the day. There will usually be another possible version. Finding it is not a necessary part of leaving the house. If the same problem returns next time, remember the change that worked rather than adding the entire outfit to a list of things to avoid.
