Start with the dinner you are actually having
A neighbourhood restaurant after work is different from a formal celebration. Look at the invitation, venue and people involved before deciding that the daytime clothes are inadequate. Often a familiar pair of trousers or a dress already works; it is the outer layer or accessories that make it feel tied to the earlier part of the day.
Choose a base that remains comfortable after several hours. A top that wrinkles heavily, needs constant adjustment or shows every mark may leave you with more to manage later. This does not mean avoiding delicate clothes entirely. It means deciding how much attention you want to give them on that particular day.
Change one visible element
Taking off a work cardigan may reveal a neckline that feels different in the evening. Replacing a large tote with a small bag changes the outline. Earrings or a scarf can move attention towards the face. Choose the change that makes sense for the clothes, rather than adding all of them together.
If you plan to change shoes, try both pairs with the trouser or dress hem. The evening pair may have a different sole height, leaving fabric on the floor. Flat shoes are entirely workable for many dinners; a long day is not a reason to force tired feet into an uncomfortable alternative.
Pack the change deliberately
Put small jewellery in a pouch so it is not loose at the bottom of a bag. Check that the evening bag holds the essentials you will need, including anything required for the trip home. Moving items between bags in a hurry is an easy way to leave something behind.
Allow a moment to check the outfit before leaving work or home. Smooth the collar, look for a mark and decide whether the outer layer still suits the weather. You do not need to make the clothes look unworn; they have accompanied you through a day.
If the dinner genuinely needs a different dress code, a complete change may be the sensible option. The useful distinction is between a real requirement and the feeling that every new part of a day demands new clothes.
