Compare the two waistlines
A denim jacket that ends near the waist of a dress can leave the skirt's shape visible. A longer jacket covers more of that transition and creates a straighter outline. Neither is automatically better. Try the jacket open and closed to see which version you enjoy.
If the dress has a gathered waist, a stiff jacket hem can rest on it and push outwards. A shorter or softer jacket may fall more easily. Conversely, a simple straight dress can take a longer jacket without the same interaction. Look at the actual fabrics rather than assuming every denim jacket works with every dress.
Use the contrast deliberately
Denim brings a firm texture to a soft dress. A pale wash can make the outfit feel lighter, while dark denim may create a clearer frame. Distressing, contrast stitching and metal buttons add detail before you choose any jewellery.
With a printed dress, a relatively plain jacket can give the pattern space. With a plain dress, the denim texture may supply enough interest by itself. Exact colour coordination is not necessary, but compare the pieces in daylight if their shades are close.
Leave room in the sleeves
A sleeveless dress is usually simpler to layer than one with substantial sleeves. Puff sleeves, ties and gathered shoulders can bunch beneath a fitted jacket. Move your arms and sit before deciding the combination works. If it feels crowded, a roomier jacket or another layer may be the sensible choice.
Rolling the jacket cuffs can change the appearance, but check that the fold is comfortable and stays in place. The denim may become thick at the elbow. There is no need to roll it merely because that is how the jacket is often photographed.
Finish for the actual day
Choose shoes for the route and the dress hem. Trainers, sandals or boots can each work with denim, but they produce different outfits. A large bag may reinforce the casual side; a smaller one may make the combination feel ready for lunch or dinner.
Take the jacket off and check the dress on its own. If the room becomes warm, you should be happy with that version too. The jacket is most useful when it gives the dress another way to be worn, rather than becoming something you cannot remove.
