Look at the outfit, not just the fabric

Linen creases are more noticeable in some shapes and colours than others. Before reaching for an iron, put the garment beside the rest of the outfit. A relaxed shirt with flat sandals can carry a softer finish than a structured jacket worn to a formal appointment. The aim is the appearance you want for that situation, not the removal of every sign that cloth has moved.

Check the distinction between ordinary folds from wearing and deep storage creases. A trouser fold created by sitting is different from a sharp line left by weeks under a heavy stack. Better storage can reduce the latter without changing the character of the fabric.

Care instructions still come first

The word linen does not tell you everything about a garment. It may be blended, lined, dyed or finished in a way that affects care. Read its instructions before washing, drying or pressing. Choose any heat treatment from the label rather than copying the setting used for another linen item.

If the garment needs finishing, give yourself time to do it properly and let it become ready for wearing before putting it on. Avoid trying to press a sleeve while wearing it or treating steam as harmless because it does not touch the fabric. Follow the appliance's directions and use a stable working area.

Let storage support the shape

Hang or fold according to what suits the particular piece and its care guidance. A shirt you want to wear soon may be easier to keep visible on an appropriate hanger. Trousers folded at a familiar line can be easier to find than a tightly rolled bundle. Do not force everything into a crowded drawer and then blame the fabric for arriving creased.

For travel, decide what finish is realistic at the destination. Check what facilities will actually be available instead of assuming a hotel iron or steamer. A slightly relaxed outfit can be planned deliberately, with pieces that look coherent without an elaborate finishing routine.

When buying linen, consider whether you enjoy it after an hour of normal movement. Trying it only while standing still can miss the quality that will shape your experience of it. If you want a permanently crisp surface, another fabric may suit that preference better. If you enjoy the folds, leave them room to be part of the outfit.
