Empty more than the main compartment

Take out receipts, pens, coins and anything left in a small pocket. Check corners and seams gently rather than shaking the bag aggressively. A forgotten liquid or loose pen creates a different storage problem from ordinary dust. Deal with marks according to the maker's guidance before putting the bag away.

Let the bag become dry and ready for storage if it has been caught in rain or cleaned. Follow material-specific advice; heat is not a universal way to hurry the process. A structured leather bag and a washable canvas tote should not inherit the same routine merely because both are called handbags.

Support without forcing

If the maker recommends stuffing to preserve the shape, use a clean, suitable material and add only enough to support the form. Overfilling can pull on seams or distort a closure. Keep handles and straps in a position that does not create an awkward bend, following any instructions supplied with the bag.

Use a dust cover where appropriate, but do not treat a cover as a substitute for suitable conditions. Choose a clean, dry place away from direct sun and sources of heat. Avoid pressing a delicate surface against rough hardware or another item whose colour might transfer. If you are unsure about a finish, consult the maker rather than applying a general leather rule.

Make the next choice easy

Place the bag so you can take it out without dragging it beneath a pile. Very tall stacks of soft bags can hide the one you intend to use and crush the lower pieces. A shelf divided into a few spaces may work better than a row of hooks carrying every bag by its handles.

Keep removable straps with the correct bag. A small labelled pouch can hold them without leaving buckles against a delicate surface. If a strap is needed for daily use, store it in a way that makes reattaching it straightforward rather than creating a separate search.

Before the next outing, inspect the closure and strap attachment points as you refill the bag. If it needs repair, address that before loading it. Returning the contents deliberately also gives you a chance to leave behind the things that have been travelling with you without a purpose.
